Fred Courtney
Glace Bay Minor Hockey is saddened to learn of the passing of legendary Glace Bay Miner player, Fred Courtney, The prolific goal-scoring great, known for his end-to-end rushes and flare for scoring the big goal is carved in Glace Bay hockey lore.
He was captain of the fabled 1955-56 GB Junior ' Cinderella ' Miners , a team that went from the bottom to the top capturing the Cape Breton League championship in a 9 game series against the rival Sydney Millionaires.
The team was inducted into the Maritime Sport Hall of Fame. GBMH was proud to induct Courtney, along with linemates Vince Ryan and Naish Batten (the 7,8,9 line) in our inaugural GB Miners Hall of Fame ceremony.
We are also proud to award annually the Fred Courtney trophy to the player deemed to be the best forward in GBMH.
Fred was predeceased by his wife, Jean and is survived by his children Elaine, Raymond, Glenn and families.
