U18AA coach Darrell MacAulay and manager Kenny MacLean were talking about getting their team involved with our community. So they figured with Christmas coming up soon they would like to help out a few families the best way they could. With that being said they only had approximately five days to put something together. After their conversation they approached GBMH executive and asked them if they would be approved for doing a block draw where they would sell 100 blocks at $10 apiece. The winner would receive $500 and we would have $500 to help out in the community somewhere .
Within five days all the kids had the block sold and they were able to do the draw and Valerie Burke, one of the players grandmother won the prize. Next we were trying to figure out what was the quickest way to get the money that they raised into the community where it could be the best assistance to somebody. After a conversation with James Edwards he suggested they look at Lisa Turnbull Roach’s Ovec Adopt a Family or John White’s Christmas Crew. The team decided that they would split the money and help both groups. A representative from both groups were invited to meet the team and explain to the players where the money was being used and the good that the players were doing by helping out with this little fundraiser.
Darrell MacAulay says they are very appreciative of Glace Bay Minor Hockey allowing them to do this draw because it is a non-characteristic fundraiser and does not fall under the fundraising criteria for any team involved with the association, but with that said James Edwards approved it because they were donating 100% of the profits back to a good cause.
What an exciting dayWe want to congratulate Georgina Byrne, our Christmas 50/50 draw winner. Georgina took home$183,466 today. Thanks to Mayor McDougall who joined us today, and thanks to everyone who purchased tickets, it was one our biggest draws to date! Next draw takes place December 27th!
