CB CUP CHAMPS!

The Glace Bay U15 AA Miners defeated Sydney 5-1 in the final of the Cape Breton Cup on Sunday at Membertou Sport and Wellness Centre.

Caleb Green opened the scoring for the miners at 3:08 of the first period and led 1-0 after 20 minutes.

Green would add pot his second of the in the second period, and Steven Mann would score shorthanded to give the miners a 3-1 lead after 40 minutes.

The miners wouldn’t look back heading into the third, adding two more goals off the sticks of Matt Phillips and Landon Comer.

The Glace Bay U15 A Miners were also victorious on the weekend in New Waterford. 

The miners battled hard and defeated the Sharks in the U15 A Cape Breton Cup final on Sunday at the New Waterford District Community Centre.

Championship Season: Six CB Cups this weekend

SYDNEY, N.S. — Championship season will resume for local minor hockey teams as six Cape Breton Cup championship tournaments are scheduled to take place this weekend. 

The under-18 ‘C’ and under-11 ‘AA’ tournaments will be hosted by the Glace Bay Minor Hockey Association at both the Miners Forum in Glace Bay and the Dominion and District Community Centre. 

The under-18 ‘C’ tournament will kick off on Thursday with the Cape Breton County Islanders playing the Sydney Steelers at 6 p.m. in Glace Bay. Action continues on Friday with New Waterford and Cape Breton County at 6 p.m. and the two Glace Bay teams playing at 7:30 p.m., both in Glace Bay.

The event will continue on Saturday in both Glace Bay and Dominion. The semifinal is Sunday at 9:30 a.m. and the championship game is later in the day at 1 p.m., both at Miners Forum. 

As for the under-11 ‘AA’ event, the two-day tournament will kick off on Saturday with Glace Bay hosting Cape Breton West at 11 a.m. The Miners will also play at 4:30 p.m. against Cape Breton County. 

The semifinal will be held Sunday at 11 a.m. followed by the championship game at 2:30 p.m. Both are scheduled for Miners Forum. 

Meanwhile, the under-18 ‘AA’ tournament will be hosted by the Cape Breton County Minor Hockey Association and will be held at the Cape Breton County Recreation Centre in Coxheath.  

The tournament begins on Friday with Glace Bay and Northside at 2:15 p.m. followed by the host Cape Breton County and New Waterford at 3:45 p.m., Sydney and Northside at 5:15 p.m., New Waterford and Glace Bay at 6:45 p.m. and Cape Breton County against Sydney at 8:15 p.m. 

Games will continue on Saturday, running from 12 p.m. to 7 p.m. The semifinal game is Sunday at 10:15 a.m. followed by the championship at 1:30 p.m.

Miners Drop Game 1

The Glace Bay U-13 AAA Miners opened up their playoff series on Sunday with a 4-1 loss to Chebucto. 

After a scoreless first period Alex Brown would make it 1-0 for the Chebucto Atlantics at the 2:26 mark. The Atlantics would add to their lead at 6:47 off the stick of Lokua Calvert. The score was 2-0 after 40 minutes. 

The Atlantics would add two more goals in the third. Cole Simmons had the lone marker for the miners. 

The best 2 of 3 series now shifts to the mainland for game 2 and possibly game 3 if needed.

13-A Cape Breton Cup: Miners and Vikings battle to tie

GLACE BAY, N.S. – The Glace Bay Miners and Northside Vikings battled to a 2-2 tie to open the under-13 ‘A’ Cape Breton Cup hockey tournament at the Miners Forum in Glace Bay on Thursday.

Michael Smeltzer and Travis Smith-MacNeil netted goals for the Miners (0-0-1)

Colby Viva had both goals for the Vikings (0-0-1).

Jesse Walsh was between the pipes for Glace Bay, while Linden Howley was in the crease for Northside.

The tournament will continue on Friday with the Northside facing the Cape Breton County Islanders at 6 p.m. at the Miners Forum.

Glace Bay’s next game will be Saturday at 9 a.m. against Cape Breton County. The team will also play later in the day at 2 p.m. against the Vikings.

The tournament’s championship game, featuring the top two teams, will be held at 2:30 p.m. on Sunday.
