1955/56 Glace Bay Miners inducted into the Maritime Sports Hall of Fame
The 1955/56 Glace Bay Miners were recently inducted into the Maritime Sports Hall of Fame at the BMO Centre in Bedford NS.
The Glace Bay Junior Miners were actual coal miners. They put in an 8 hour day in the coal mines before practice or playing a game. Although their regular season was no great shakes, it was a totally different story during the playoffs.. They defeated the Northside Franklins and Sydney Millionaires to win the Cape Breton championship. Then they defeated the Halifax Junior Canadians in six games to win the Maritime Championship. The lost the Eastern Canadian Finals three games to two to the Montreal St. Jean Braves which included future Montreal Canadiens star Bobby Rousseau.
Captain Fred Courtney and some of his teammates were on hand at the induction.
